Early morning is a busy time on the water. By now our presence has been forgotten, or accepted, and all attention is given to the serious business of breakfast. The Mallards harvest the shallows, up-ending to reach the muddy bottom. A female Red-Winged Blackbird scurries up and down the cattails in search of bugs, maybe even adding a straw or two to her new nest as she goes.

The Coho run in De Mamiel Creek was rebuilt because thousands of people invested their caring, time and energy in the health of their local stream. Now the Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans wants to blow up the dam that prevents the creek from drying up in the summer.

Remember Bobbing for Apples with your hands tied behind your back? Watching CRD Board directors muster their best eloquence to oppose a by-law they were not allowed to vote on reminded me of the childhood game. It was hard not to feel disempowered ... but we are not giving up.
