Creepy Sprawlies
The CRD is mulling by-laws that would allow sprawl and replace existing forest lands with scattered, car-dependent suburbs. Let them know Hallowe'en is over and we don't want any creeping sprawl.
The Capital Regional District is considering by-laws that will affect two thirds of its total area on Vancouver Island and open it up to sprawling, car-dependent development.
The area - most of the zone labelled 14 on the CRD map - is now a living wilderness covered by an intricate network of wild rivers and streams. As such, it is an important carbon sink.
The proposed by-laws would reduce the minimum lot size in the area from 120 hectares to 2 hectares. Any major development would result in the worst kind of sprawl, replacing productive wilderness with scattered, car-dependent suburbs.
The immediate issue is who will decide on the by-laws that will govern the future use of the land. At present, the decision is in the hands of a CRD subcommittee. Sierra Victoria believes that a decision of this magnitude must be made by the entire CRD Board.
If you live in the Capital Regional District, please call or write the Board members from your area and let them know that the full Board must vote on this important issue!
This is not just a Victoria issue. With the downturn in the forest industry, tens of thousands of hectares of B.C. forest lands are coming under intense development pressure.
