Welcome Comox Valley!

Sierra Club BC is delighted to welcome our newest local group! Formerly Courtenay River Estuary Action Committee, Sierra Comox Valley is doing great work to protect the sensitive Courtenay estuary and watershed.

Compared to Exxon-Valdez, at first glance a new Gas ‘N Go in Comox doesn’t sound like an environmental disaster in the making.

But a group of concerned citizens figured that’s exactly what it was. The gas station was slated to be built smack in the middle of a high-risk earthquake area, only a few metres from an estuary teeming with eagles, trumpeter swans, shore birds and fish.

After all, only a few months earlier the province had to pick up the tab to clean up an oil spill from a gas station in nearby Cowichan – after the owner let it leak into the fish-bearing Cowichan River for six months.

The concerned citizens’ group wrote letters to the editor and engaged the regional district. In the process, they created a vision for a truly sustainable Courtenay River Estuary. In April this year, the group formally applied for local group status with Sierra Club BC.

We are delighted to welcome Sierra Comox Valley!
