Guiding Principles

Our Education Program is guided by the principles of ringing people together, connection with the Earth, Empowerment, and education by doing

The goal of Sierra Club’s Education Program is to develop a student population that is aware of and concerned about the environment. Through increased knowledge, skills, and environmentally positive attitudes, students are empowered to work individually and collectively towards finding solutions to current problems…and preventing new ones!

Our learning resources and school programs are:

The following four principles help guide our Environmental Education Program:

Bringing People Together: We recognize and respect individual knowledge and experience, and value individual emotions, beliefs, cultures, and abilities. We provide high-quality information and a balanced perspective.

Connection with the Earth: We focus on the interconnectedness of ecosystems, linking the local to the global. We encourage stewardship to help reduce human impact on the planet.

Empowerment: We seek to stimulate critical thought and empower participants to engage in environmental activities. Our programs consider a wide range of opinions and values. We strive to inspire and motivate using high-energy presentations and activities that go beyond the classroom.

Education by Doing: Hands-on, interactive presentations and activities linked with outdoors activities help participants derive a sense of place.
