The Contest

Our Take Action! Contest is a chance for you and your students to become involved in environmental stewardship on a deeper, on-going level! Choose a contest category below and enter your project (via emailed photos) into the contest! Please contact us if you need any support in completing your challenge.

  1. Writing for the Earth
(Create a poem, song, story, play or a short film)

Gather your pens, unleash your inner poet! Actors, authors, composers, poets, singers and musicians, the Earth needs your help to deliver a message. You can help raise awareness and promote environmental action in an entertaining way.
  2. 3D 3R (recycled reused renewed) Art Project
Your class will give new life to old objects, including those that cannot be recycled like clothing, vinyl records, photos, etc. Use your imagination and make a statement about how much waste we generate and how much stuff we can reuse.
  3. Green Science Presentation
Hey there, scientists and alchemists! Your class can organize a green Science Fair with topics relating to science and ecology: healthy functioning of ecosystems, British Columbia’s forests, sustainable solutions for diverse lifestyles. Educate your school community about the role scientific processes and human behaviour play in our environment.
  4. Get Eco-Active!
Is your class active with a love for outdoor games and activities? As a class, choose your favourite game and transform it into an activity that encourages environmental stewardship - or create a game from scratch. The project must include spending time outside and get you moving while taking environmental action.
  5. Create a Compost or Garden
This challenge is to create a class compost or garden. More than one third of what goes into the garbage could actually be composted. By creating a class compost, your class will help reduce the size of our landfills and help fight global warming. The rich soil made in a compost is perfect for a school-yard garden.
  6. Design your own Challenge.
Have something else in mind? Get creative and come up with your own challenge that promotes environmental stewardship and action.

Entries for the Take Action! Contest can be submitted to schoolprograms (AT) sierraclub.bc.ca.

I plan to tell my (hypothetical) grand-kids something similar: that the sun always shines on Earth Day. Last week, in Victoria, the sun was shining bright enough to light up the next century of Earth Days.
