Hands Across the Sand

Taking a Stand Against Offshore Drilling

When: Saturday, June 26

Where: Willingdon Beach, Powell River

Everyone is invited to gather at Willingdon Beach in Powell River at 11 am.  At 12 noon, participants will stand together in a line, and join hands for 15 minutes.

Hands Across The Sand events are being planned for this date across the world.  It began in Florida as a response to the oil spill in the Gulf - but now it’s catching on, globally.

In Florida on February 13th, 2010, people came together to protest plans of US Congress to lift the ban on offshore drilling. This became the largest gathering in the history of Florida against drilling, with thousands coming out - representing 60 towns and 90 beaches, state-wide.

This is not a political event. It is about the protection of oceans, marine wildlife, and coastal economies. The image of thousands of people joining hands across the world to speak up for their environment sends out a powerful message. This world belongs to all of us, and we have a say in how we care for it.

Get Out Migration

On April 29, Sierra Malaspina was part of a walk from Willingdon Beach to support Alexandra Morton's Get Out Migration to protect wild salmon. We walked from Willingdon Beach to the ferry, then boarded the ferry to join cohorts from Sierra Comox Valley at the rally in Comox.

We gathered at Willingdon  Beach at 10:30 am for prayers and blessings with Elsie Paul for the wild salmon, then continued with Eric drumming to the12:00 ferry.

Watch a video of the Sacred Salmon Celebration at Willingdon Beach, which kicked off the walk.

Code Blue - Marine Rescue and Resuscitation

Multimedia presentation by Colin Campbell and Ana Simeon

August 20

Sea Otter Diane Pinch

Whether it's paddling, surfing, diving or seafood barbecues, the ocean calls loudest in the summer time.

Sierra Club BC's marine team is heeding the call of the Big Blue with a new multimedia show. Code Blue: Marine Rescue and Resuscitation - by Sierra's science advisor Dr. Colin Campbell and writer Ana Simeon - makes climate change science come alive with great visuals, a dash of humour and passion for action.

The slideshow begins on windswept Triangle Island off the north-west coast of Vancouver Island, where the world's largest colony of the Cassin's Auklets nests each year.
After examining reasons for the declining numbers and size of Auklet hatchlings, we conduct other diagnostic tests and prescribe some "treatments" - ranging from emergency-room procedures such as a steep carbon descent to citizen-administered "acupuncture".

What's citizen acupuncture? Find out …

Colin Campbell, PhD, trained as a palaeontologist, worked with an Australian National University research team on climate-induced sea level change in the southern hemisphere, and since 1998 has worked on forest and marine conservation issues in BC. He is Marine Campaign Coordinator and Science Advisor to the Sierra Club BC.

Ana Simeon is a published writer and journalist in Victoria, and works with Colin on marine issues at the Sierra Club BC. Ana's passion for action complements Colin's long-term perspective and dry sense of humour.
