A sci-fi style film shows what the world is set to look like in 2055. This film received rave reviews in the UK and inspired the entire British Cabinet to sign a pledge to change its evil ways. Jamie Biggar will talk about his experience as a youth delegate at the Copenhagen climate conference.
Please note: Doors open at 6:30 and the event starts at 7pm – a half hour earlier than usual.
OUR FEATURE FILM: Blurring the boundary between sci-fi and documentary, The Age of Stupid peers back in time from a climate crisis-wracked 2055 to lament our current inaction on the mother of all conflicts: the war on Terra. Beginning with the Big Bang, The Age of Stupid hurls toward 2055 at light-speed, only to find Earth’s once-mighty cities annihilated. From a drowned London to a buried Las Vegas and a burning Sydney, its imagery conjures up disturbing visions of humanity and hyper-consumption gone seriously awry.
Pete Postlethwaite plays an archivist who has assembled a global digital archive in a forbidding tower in the melted Arctic. A brilliant actor, Postlethwaite brings restraint and sadness to his part, which is the only fictional role in this experimental documentary. His archive, consisting of real footage and media feeds, as well as interviews with global-warming experts, tells the story in the film. By the time The Age of Stupid’s flashbacks are over and the viewer is stuck in a ravaged 2055, the yearning for preventative action is palpable and powerful.
OUR GUEST SPEAKER: Jamie Biggar is a youth environmentalist and researcher in BC. He is the Chair of the Sierra Club of BC, co-founder of Common Energy and goBeyond, and a research associate at the POLIS Project on Ecological Governance. Currently he is doing graduate research on post-Copenhagen climate movement strategy.
Jamie was one of the Canadian Youth Delegates to the Copenhagen Climate Summit. He focused on domestic citizen engagement and new media.
