The Courtenay River Estuary is the heart of the Comox Valley. It is our Eco-Neighbourhood—a place where life flourishes and is protected. Each day, in the rhythm of the seasons, the tidal
waters roll in from the ocean to meet the waters flowing down from the mountains. The comingling of waters brings forth life and provides the nutrients and habitats to sustain it.
Sierra Comox Valley works toward a vision of the estuary as an Eco-Neighbourhood, where people, fish, birds, and a variety of animals and other life forms form a single community. They share a common sense of place, are aware of one another’s presence,
and live together in harmony.
In this unique neighbourhood, there is respect for all life forms and for the ecosystems that support them. There is a
strong sense of togetherness. Neighbours are aware that they depend upon the estuary and that what happens in one part of the estuary affects the whole estuary.
"We are working to make the Courtenay River Estuary a true eco-neighbourhood where humans, and other species and life-forms, all sharing a common sense of place, live together in harmony," said Mike Bell, chair of Sierra Comox Valley.
