Haida Gwaii

Sierra Club Haida Gwaii had its first gathering in October 1999. It was an inspiring wild-food potluck that set the tone for celebrating the group's natural surroundings and working to protect them.

We are a committed group of islanders passionate about living in this magical environment. We believe that healthy island communities have strong cultural values, a sustainable economy and a harmonious relationship with the environment. Much of what we do is by collaboration with all communities, local NGOs and islands' governance.

I went there to join concerned citizens from across western BC – which included a busload from Victoria, and outstanding representation from our Sierra local groups on Quadra Island, in Powell River and Comox.
B.C. First Nations Oppose Enbridge, Tankers
Spotlight
B.C.’s coastal waters are stunning in their beauty and richness. More than 45,000 coastal jobs, from First Nations fishing boats off Haida Gwaii to a burgeoning eco-tourism sector, depend on this unspoiled natural bounty.
Take Action on Tankers
Spotlight
If the China-backed Enbridge pipeline goes ahead, oil tankers will carry tar sands crude through the narrow, reef-studded channels and inlets of the Great Bear Rainforest. Take Action to stop tankers on B.C.'s north coast.

I’ve been called some interesting things since I started working for Sierra Club B.C. five years ago. An eco-fascist, for starters. That unfortunate barb was from B.C. Liberal MLA Bill Bennett, who said that we were “eco-facists” (his spelling) who wanted to paint the province our favourite colour—green.
