Victoria

Sierra Victoria leads Outings to wilderness areas around the city to help CRD residents connect with nature in our back yard. We also collaborate with other groups on campaigns to protect Wild Places that are a crucial piece in the mosaic of a sustainable Capital Region - such as the Juan de Fuca trail. Sierra Victoria is also concerned about the level of cancer-causing substances in our soil and water and have been been instrumental in persuading the municipalities of Victoria, Esquimalt and Oak Bay to pass pesticide bans.

Sierra Victoria is part of the Transition Town movement which fosters a post-carbon way of life at a local level. Transition Victoria is engaging the Greater Victoria region in creating a resilient future. We envision a city of Greater Victoria that is transformed over the next twenty years from the current addiction to fossil fuels to a diverse, sustainable, resilient local culture and economy.

Sierra Victoria was formed in 1991. Our mandate is to address a wide range of environmental issues that affect the environment of the Capital Regional District (CRD). All members of Sierra Club BC who live in the CRD are automatically members of the Victoria group, and receive the group's newsletter.

Want to get involved? Join Sierra Victoria's next meeting on Feb 1. Call 778-433-2934 for more info.

About the Executive Committee

The group's activities are organized and conducted by a volunteer executive committee. We meet once a month to produce and plan the Victoria Group Newsletter and to organize and develop our campaigns on particular issues and other community initiatives.

We have positions open on our executive committee, but there is no obligation to take on official position and all Sierra Club members are welcome to attend executive meetings.

Many people join the executive to work on particular issues (many of our active issues have been initiated by new executive members) to contribute their skills where needed, to discuss CRD environmental issues, and to take action.

Shaded Creek: Colquitz Park and Trail
Press Clip
The beauty uplifts, but does not take away the worry over what will happen to the fish in the Colquitz. Above all, we need to remember what an oil spill looks and smells like – whether in the Colquitz, in the Goldstream last year or anywhere – lest, through ignorance and complacency we allow tanker traffic to bring the same fate to the salmon of the North Coast, and the food webs and communities that depend on them.
Editorial didn’t show true financial picture
Press Clip
Your editorial suggested 10 to 15 acres be removed from the Agricultural Land Reserve for development. This despite the fact that an increase of revenue to the municipality of $350,000 was reported by the Sierra Club of B.C.
Make Sandown a Community Farm!
Spotlight
A visionary proposal for North Saanich would turn a large chunk of Sandown racetrack into a covenanted community farm. This is the best news for food security on the Island in a long time! Please join the public meeting on Wednesday, Jan 11 and support this win-win initiative.
