orcas2What's at Stake?

The race is on to conserve what remains of B.C.'s magnificent ancient forests, wildlife and marine ecosystems. Our unique wild places are threatened by clear-cut logging, global warming, oil tanker traffic, unscrupulous extraction of resources like coalbed methane, pipelines, pollution and unbridled development.

bridge_nikosnowWe live in a province so dazzling that our vehicle license plates call it "Beautiful BC" and "The Best Place on Earth".
Yet more than one half of BC's ancient forests have vanished, and only a small percentage of those that remain are legally protected.  Oceans and rivers are in peril. We orcastake great pride in BC's rare biodiversity, yet we're home to more endangered species than any other Canadian province or territory.  As global warming puts new pressures on surviving wild girlspaces, Sierra Club BC's role as an environmental watchdog and conservation champion is more vital than ever.

What We Do

Sierra Club BC’s dynamic and professional staff work to preserve B.C.’s imperilled wilderness and wildlife, and to ensure that B.C. is a global leader when it comes to tackling climate change. Sierra Club BC:

  • Presses for strong, effective wilderness and wildlife protections in provincial legislation.
  • Tracks provincial commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Monitors provincial forestry policy to ensure environmental protections.
  • Advocates for parks and protected areas.
  • Cultivates the next generation of environmental stewards through our award-winning Environmental Education Program, reaching 10,000 school children across B.C. each year in Kindergarten through Grade 12.
  • Provides quick answers to urgent environment-related questions from the public through our innovative Enviro911 Program.
  • Sows an enduring grassroots commitment to wild spaces through our guided Outings Program that introduces people to urban parks, wilderness and the marine environment.
  • Creates and publishes GIS maps of B.C.’s ancient rainforests, logging activity, the Great Bear Rainforest, land use plans, wild salmon stocks at risk and potential sea level rises due to global warming.
