Jens Wieting Bio
Jens is from Germany and worked for an environmental organization, Robin Wood, prior to coming to Canada, primarily on tropical rainforest protection with a focus on the pulp and paper industry. This included market campaigns and direct engagement with industry in Germany and Indonesia. Before that, he worked on a land use planning project for the German development corporation in Nicaragua, as well as for an environmental consulting firm. His academic background is in land use planning and environmental studies.
Jens works for the implementation of the Great Bear Rainforest Agreement that the province, industry and First Nations announced in February 2006. For this purpose he works in a team together with Greenpeace and Forest Ethics under the umbrella of the Rainforest Solutions Project (RSP). He is engaged with industry and the province to work towards implementation of lighter touch logging practices, effective management of a network of protected areas and financial support for sustainable development of First Nations communities.
Jens enjoys spending time outdoors with his family in BC’s wilderness (something that hardly exists anymore in Germany). He is an amateur photographer and loves exploring the world (which is why he decided to stay longer in Canada). He is also into cooking (Italian food), music and cinema.
