While he was at University, Brian got involved in a campaign to save the Nitinat Triangle on Vancouver Island, which successfully mobilized Sierra Club BC supporters to preserve this unique piece of  wilderness.

"I support a number of environmental groups, but I have always felt that the Sierra Club is my home base. I feel most comfortable here because Sierra Club BC has always had a reasoned, science-based approach to things, that was comfortable for me to support," says Brian.

Working as a financial planner and investment consultant, Brian realized that this career provided a unique opportunity for bringing environmental and social awareness to the bottom line-focused financialindustry.

"Right from the beginning I was concerned about companies'
environmental impact. My  mother was a three-pack-a-day smoker and I didn't want to invest in companies that were doing things that I was working hard to fight. And I figured there must be other people who felt the same," says Brian.

Brian was one of a handful of pioneers who spearheaded the idea of socially responsible investment in Canada. Although Brian is now retired, the Pinch Group continues to be one of BC's premiere teams helping individuals align their environmental and social values with their investments.

"Once you accept the idea that you want to bring in non-financial factors to your investments, then you start thinking about human rights and gender equity and nuclear peace and you go for the whole nine yards," Brian says.

Brian and his wife Diane live in Victoria and spend most of
their free time biking and backpacking. Their favourite places are the Canadian Rockies, Northern BC, and the Yukon.
