Jamie Biggar
A graduate student in Environmental Studies, Jamie Biggar is passionate about creating solutions to climate change that move institutions beyond climate-neutral. Working with Common Energy network at the University of Victoria, Jamie sees his role as facilitating the self-organization of a committed network that will seed change in the wider community.
“Moving beyond climate-neutral means that a person or institution does more to solve the problems of climate change than they do to cause them,” says Jamie. “This is why I connected with the Sierra Club. Programs like Sierra Small Parties and CERCles (Carbon Emissions Reduction Clubs) create places where people can come together to find the right questions to ask, develop the right answers for their individual circumstances, and begin to create appropriate change.”
Jamie’s main environmental interest is in connecting other environmental issues, like ecological restoration and habitat protection, to climate change. He has an emerging passion for climate justice - an integration of climate change strategies with social justice objectives.
Jamie's latest personal venture is running a worm composting bin in his Victoria apartment, where he has already successfully managed to replace indoor heating with a collection of festive sweaters.
