Federal Oceans Strategy
If implemented, the 2002 federal Oceans Strategy will make Canada a world leader in marine conservation.
Implementing Canada’s Oceans Strategy
The federal Oceans Strategy was developed in 2002. If implemented, it will make Canada a world leader in marine conservation. The strategy sketches out a strategic path for achieving federal mandates and meeting Canada’s international commitments for marine conservation through an ecosystem-based management approach.
Sierra Club BC calls on the federal government to allocate an additional $100 million annually for five years in order to fulfil critical commitments made in the Oceans Strategy. That funding would allow a comprehensive planning process, the designation of many new marine protected areas, vital scientific research and reforms necessary for a conservation-based approach to oceans management.
