Happy Parks Day, Canada!
Join the celebration on the 100th anniversary of B.C. Parks and Parks Canada this Parks Day. Get outside at your favourite park on July 16th for special events. Sierra Club BC is working to protect this legacy, recently threatened by years of funding cuts.
Species Report Misses the Mark
The B.C. government's Task Force report on species at risk misses the mark and is weak on recommendations. Sierra Club BC and partners call for government to stop wasting time and introduce law to protect 1,900 at-risk species.
2010 Annual Report
Sierra Club BC's 2010 Annual Report celebrates a year of environmental accomplishments. From the Flathead River Valley and Great Bear Rainforest to endangered orca whales, we made major progress in protecting B.C.'s wilderness and wildlife. Read all about it.
Species Protection in the Legislature
Sierra Club BC and our partners welcome a new proposal in the BC Legislature for long-overdue legislation to protect the province's endangered species and their habitat.
Free Parking Little Help for Parks
The B.C. government has announced it will remove controversial parking meters from provincial parks. It's a welcome step, but does not erase the damage done to our parks system following years of major funding cuts.
BC Parks: 100 Stories for 100 Years
Provincial parks in British Columbia hold many stories. But these days, the parks themselves have a sad story to tell about a decade of government neglect. Send us your stories about how parks cutbacks have affected you. Let’s gather 100 stories for 100 years of our parks system – and shape what the next century looks like.
A Hundred Years of BC Parks
On March 1, 1911, Strathcona Park on Vancouver Island was created as the first BC park. Since then BC parks have expanded in size but recent years have seen shameful neglect and underfunding.
B.C. Budget Fails to Deliver on Parks
The B.C. budget fails to deliver a single new cent for parks and protected areas, even though 2011 is the 100th anniversary of the B.C. parks system. Sierra Club BC was in the February 15 budget lock-up.
A Look Back at 2010
As 2011 begins, Sierra Club BC is celebrating a year full of major accomplishments, hard-fought battles and amazing partnerships. We're proud of what we've done and are thankful for our supporters and partners who helped make 2010 such a productive year.
Forest Service Cuts Deepen
A new report says that cuts to British Columbia’s Forest Service's workforce have opened the door to abuses of our resource management system. The report, published by Sierra Club BC and the CCPA, calls for a provincial commission of inquiry into the Forest Service's future.
The Line at Lyell Island
The Haida Nation celebrated the 25th anniversary of the logging blockade at Lyell Island - a pivotal moment for aboriginal rights and for conservation in B.C. Sierra Club BC's Caitlyn Vernon was at the feast.
Keep Jumbo Wild
The B.C. government is poised to make a decision about the controversial Jumbo Glacier Resort proposed for the wild Jumbo Valley. The super-sized resort, on a receding glacier, would fragment critical grizzly bear habitat and threaten river flows. A new article looks at the issues.
Logging Villain After B.C. Pulp Mill
Sinar Mas is poised to acquire the Howe Sound Pulp and Paper operation from Canfor. We are urging Canfor to find alternatives to bringing in the operator with the world's worst environmental and human rights record in the industry.
Jim Bohlen 1926-2010
Sierra Club BC is saddened to note the passing of one of our first directors. Jim Bohlen died on July 5, 2010, at the age of 84.
What our Supporters Told Us
We want to get to know you better, so at the end of 2009 we asked some of our regular donors for their feedback. Many of you chose to share your interests and thoughts on how Sierra Club BC can be even more effective. Thank you!
Good Wood Awards
Love 'em or hate 'em, the Olympics got this one right. Sierra Club BC and partners recognised selected Olympic venues with a Good Wood Award.
Hope for BC's Endangered Species
Best place on Earth? Not if you're a Mountain Caribou, Burrowing Owl or a Spotted Bat. When it comes to protecting endangered species, BC is at the back of the pack. A private member's bill offers some hope.
BC Throne Speech
As BC legislators regroup for another session, fiscal constraints loom large. With substantial cuts expected in the new budget, are we still on target to meet our climate goals? And what about other environmental issues?
Minister Penner's Math Challenge
225 park rangers before a 40% cut-back? Well, no, actually ... there were only 63.8. We sympathize - fractions and decimals are notoriously hard. That's why we advise addition and multiplication - 13.5 million hectares of BC parks require a beefed-up ranger force.
Welcome to George Heyman
Sierra Club BC is delighted to introduce our new Executive Director, George Heyman. George brings over thirty years' experience as a labour and community organizer and a strong commitment to social and environmental justice.
