April 2010

We want to get to know you better, so at the end of 2009 we asked some of our regular donors for their feedback. Many of you chose to share your interests and thoughts on how Sierra Club BC can be even more effective. Thank you!

1. No surprise that the majority of you felt climate change would be the most important environmental issue in BC in 2010. We share that feeling, which is why all of our campaigns, from the Great Bear Rainforest, school-based environmental education or the Flathead River Valley are conducted through a climate change lens. We bring climate change to the front and center every day no matter what the issue.

How we're implementing this: For 2010 and beyond we’re excited to be working on some ground-breaking work on carbon, endangered species and forests. And our partnership with the Canadian Center for Policy Alternatives Climate Justice Project is building some of the best research and recommendations at the intersection of people and climate.

2. You also felt our most important tool for creating change is negotiating with the government on issues. You wanted us to use your donations to support this vital aspect of our work. Our years of experience and credibility give us a unique position, respected by government, industry and environmental advocates alike. The incredible effort our campaigners have put in to creating a world class model for protection in the Great Bear Rainforest is an outstanding example of the value of having a voice at the government level.

3. There was also strong support amongst you for our work developing public education materials. Sierra Club BC strives to bring the latest environmental science to you in a simple and engaging way. Check out our new Code Blue video on the impact of climate change on Ocean Health for a recent example.

4. When it came to which of Sierra Club BC’s programs interested you most, you were evenly split, with endangered species protection, the Great Bear Rainforest, ocean health and climate change advocacy leading the pack. But whatever campaign most interests you, you feel that Sierra Club BC reflects your values and shares your opinions on the issues that are important to you.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts - your views are important to us and we intend to continue this and other conversations throughout 2010. Look out for an email or a telephone call inviting you to participate in a survey that will give you a more in-depth opportunity to tell us about yourself and your views.
