Adventurous Turtles
Sustainable High Schools and our friends from VIRCS, Boys and Girls Club and the Wilderness Committee enjoyed a sunny day out at Matheson Lake Regional Park this past Saturday. Youth and leaders explored the wonders of the Coastal Douglas Fir Forest, led by the expertise of naturalist Todd Carnahan from Habitat Acquisition Trust.
Games and songs kept us entertained as we eagerly anticipated Painted Turtle sightings on our way to Matheson Lake. Our expectations were far exceeded within moments of our arrival! Fawn Lilies, ancient Douglas Fir, moss-covered Maple trees and bubbling brooks lined the Galloping Goose Trail that would eventually lead us to the turtle-viewing bluff. Here, we saw five turtles taking a welcome respite from the water, gracing their sun-soaked log.
Turkey Vultures flew overhead as we made our way to the picnic area, and a River Otter swam playfully below from our lunch spot. All in all, it was a breath of fresh air for those of us who don't often have access to nature. Not to mention the new friendships and connections that were made through the cross-pollination of youth groups!
Thanks to all of the aforementioned groups for making the Earth Day Youth Hike possible! The Sustainable High Schools Project is a youth - driven program fostering Eco-stewardship and Urban Sustainability Initiatives.
